French language, literature and cultures

French is spoken in 53 countries by 200 million speakers. A thorough knowledge of French language and Francophone culture opens opportunities to students who will and work in an increasingly global society. French is part of the humanities discipline in the college of Arts and Sciences at HU.

What can I expect to learn in the French and Francophone Studies program at HU?

French courses at HU cover a variety of topics including all aspects of language learning, literature, poetry, cinema, music, business and politics. Upper level courses Focus on literature, culture, writing and analytical skills.

What is the Francophone community like at HU?

HU and Washington DC, are ideal locations for learning French and Francophone cultures. From the University’s French Cultural Society, French film festival on and off campus, to cultural activities (concerts, plays, food/drink testing) with our partners Alliance française and la Maison française, opportunities abound.

What can I do in the French/Francophone Studies field?

Majors and Minors go on to careers in a numbers of fields, including education, politics, journalism, publishing, law, business and fashion. They also pursue positions with the US State Department, the United Nations and many other international institutions such as the World Bank, IMF, UNESCO etc.
